“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and he. shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh. findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”
( Mathew 7:7-8)
We should always pray to God and ask him questions that we may receive answers. But, what do we do when he isn’t answering?! He says that he is supposed to answer our prayers so what is going on?
The first thing to remember is that God does not answer prayers that are selfish. If your prayers are driven by pride hidden in your heart he will also not answer them. Sometimes the problem is not with God but with us.
“His invitation, “Ask, and ye shall receive” (3 Ne. 27:29) does not assure that you will get what you want. It does guarantee that, if worthy, you will get what you need, as judged by a Father that loves you perfectly, who wants your eternal happiness even more than do you.”
Richard G. Scott | Trust in the Lord, Ensign, November 1995
The Lord doesn’t answer prayers immediately. We need to be patient with Heavenly Father’s timing. But we’ve never been promised an answer to questions that we never ask and we’ve never been promised an immediate answer.
Sometimes when God doesn’t answer our questions within a day or a within a week, or a month, we usually assume that he isn’t going to answer our prayers at all. This of course is a serious mistake. As long as we continue in what we are praying for, God will soon give us an answer. Patience is the key to receiving answers.
“Who can count the vast throngs of the lonely, the aged, the helpless- those who feel abandoned by the caravan of life as it moves relentlessly onward and then disappears beyond the sight of those who ponder, who wonder, and who sometimes question as they are left alone with their thoughts. Patience can be a helpful companion during such stressful times.”
Thomas S. Monson | Patience- A Heavenly Virtue, October 1995 General Conference
