I made this quote like a week ago and am finally posting it. I simply love this quote and picture combination. Nephi is such an example and hero to me. After being tied up and mocked by his brothers for 4 days, they finally freed him because they feared they were about to be swallowed up by the great waves.
“And it came to pass after they had loosed me, behold, I took the compass, and it did work whither I desired it. And it came to pass that I prayed unto the Lord; and after I had prayed the winds did cease, and the storm did cease, and there was a great calm.” 1 Nephi 18:21
By the wording of this scripture we understand the spiritual state of Nephi. The compass, or liahona, only worked by faith and he was righteous enough to ask for a miracle and be heard and have his petition answered.
I always assume (due to his righteous state) that Nephi didn’t get mad, but “frankly forgive them all that they had done” (1 Nephi 7:21), like he had previously done when they sought to take away his life. I would have reacted differently and been so mad if I was Nephi, but he took the more Christlike way, how amazing. This situation challenged Nephi, and because he was up for the challenge, it changed him. In order for us to become like our Savior, we too must accept the challenges that are before us so that they too can change us.
