Revelation is oftentimes misunderstood.
Doctrine and Covenants 9:7-8
7 Behold, you have not understood; you have supposed that I would give it unto you, when you took no thought save it was to ask me.
8 But, behold, I say unto you, that you must study it out in your mind; then you must ask me if it be right, and if it is right I will cause that your bosom shall burn within you; therefore, you shall feel that it is right. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/dc-testament/dc/9?lang=eng
Even though we have this counsel from the Lord to Oliver Cowdry, I belief that we do too much supposing that He would just give it to us because we asked. After all the Lord had said repeatedly, “ask and you shall receive.” Well there is more to the equation than just asking, we must seek and knock.
3 Nephi 14:7
7 Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. https://www.lds.org/scriptures/bofm/3-ne/14?lang=eng.
There is a requirement of effort on our part. I love this teaching from President Harold B. Lee to Elder Eyring.
Then he gave me the lesson, which I now give to you, in about these words: “Hal, when we had
done all we knew how to do, when we had our backs to the wall, then God gave us the revelation. Hal,
if you want to get revelation, do your homework.”

So, as we seek for revelation in our lives let’s put in the effort and do our homework and then will the heavens part as we shall receive revelation and divine guidance.
