“This emergency gift ensures that families fleeing the horrific violence in Ukraine will continue to receive the care and shelter they need after harrowing journeys. This gift is so much more than just a fleece blanket or warm place to sleep for a refugee family. It shows families fleeing that there is still a compassionate global community ready to help,” Grey said.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has given $2 million each to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, a total of $4 million. The Church and UNHCR has been working together since 1991.
These donations will provide food, shelter and basic necessities to refugees fleeing Ukraine. Two trucks full of sleeping bags, cots and tents were sent by The Church, to Hungary and Romania, where some of the refugees are.
Missionaries in Berlin, Germany, are going to train stations with signs showing what languages they speak, to help Ukrainian refugees find transportation and other aid.
Members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Moldova, Slovakia, Poland, Romania, and Spain have also helped give food, shelter, and clothing to the refugees.
From the very earliest hours of the armed conflict between Ukraine and Russia, The Church has helped the refugees and has partnered with many other relief organizations.
