“You will now determine for yourself whether to use a facemask in all settings at the Provo MTC based on your own individual circumstances. We encourage all to extend love and respect to others and their decisions,” Sam Penrod, a church spokesman said.

New missionaries for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, currently no longer need a COVID-19 vaccination or have a negative COVID-19 test, to go to the Missionary Training Center in Provo, Utah. However, testing will be required if a missionary has cold or flu-like symptoms before entering the MTC, the letter said.

Masks are also optional as well, but after missionaries leave the MTC for their assignments, they will be required to follow their mission’s mask guidelines.

In April of 2021, The Church required new missionaries to receive the COVID-19 vaccine to attend the MTC. Vaccinations for COVID-19 are now optional. However those that do not get vaccinated will still not be able to leave their home country for their mission.

“Up-to-date COVID-19 vaccination is still required for all missionaries to serve in assignments outside of their home countries,”  Sam Penrod said.

These changes only apply to the Provo Missionary Center to date. Changes will be made at the other nine MTCs when the local governments and COVID circumstances allow.

All of the missionaries who began or will soon begin the home part of their training on February 21, or later, should plan as soon as possible to arrive at the MTC beginning on March 30 to complete their training, the letter said.
