“The basis of (the sculpture garden) was a personal covenant that I made and … even if it never, never unfolds, if it’s never built, I still am keeping it,” Dr. Steven Neal said.
A Utah surgeon says a monument of Jesus Christ and His appearance to the Americas through the Book of Mormon, and the founding of America is coming soon to Heber Valley, Utah.
Dr. Steven Neal is a facial plastic surgeon who likes to sculpt. He has been working on this plan for many years and finally has a location for the garden; an area in Heber Valley Utah, with more than 10 acres of land.
In the year 1976, Neal heard Elder Boyd K. Packer of Christ’s church speak on art and the restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. He then decided to dedicate his artistic efforts to The Book of Mormon and restoration of the gospel.
Neal has said that the project was a very lonely effort until around 12 years ago when he started working with Michael Hall on sculptures. Later, Jerime Hooley joined the project as the third sculptor.
Dr. Steven Neal envisions the jewel of the park to be a statue of Christ, which will be 18 feet tall. Neal claims that this statue will be the largest sculpture in Utah! He said the spot picked for the statue will be very visible from many places throughout Heber Valley in Utah.
One of the sculptures in process of being designed is going to be twice life-sized. It will feature George Washington and Captain Moroni with the “title of Liberty.” This sculpture will combine a story from the Book of Mormon and a Revolutionary War story, when George Washington gave a speech asking his men to reenlist in the war effort for their families and their freedom. This statue will also portray American soldiers from different eras in the history of the United States.
