“With our combined faith and prayers, we will work our way through this issue and enjoy a bright future,” said Elder Ian S. Arden, a General Authority Seventy and Pacific Area president.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is sending important supplies to Tonga, where a volcano eruption, and a tsunami took place. Tonga has also experienced flooding from the tsunami. The Church will be sending the supplies to Tonga by airplane when the conditions at the Tonga airport allow.
Tonga includes 36 populated islands and about 60% of them are members of the Church. The Church’s shipment will include clean drinking water, face masks to protect against breathing volcanic ash, and satellite phones to help the Church leaders and government officials expand their communication.
Elder Inoke Kupu, a Area Seventy, told the Pacific Newsroom, “There is only one color in Tonga right now, and that is a dark dust.”
Any members looking to donate to help efforts in Tonga can contribute to the Church’s Humanitarian Aid Fund.
