“We’ve got good information that we believe will lead us to a suspect,’’ said Deputy Chief David Agee. “We do have evidence that detectives are following up on.”

Elder Michael Fauber of Dayton, Ohio, a full-time missionary for the Church of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints was serving in the Alabama Birmingham Mission. He was shot multiple times on December 3 in a church meetinghouse. Elder Fauber is currently hospitalized but is slowly improving.

The Elder who was shot was in the Birmingham Alabama Stake Center in Vestavia Hills. He was with two other missionaries and some other people interested in learning more about the Church. Others were playing basketball in the cultural hall. Then the shooting happened around 8:30 pm on December 3.

Elder Fauber was speaking with an unknown person who had come into the building during the basketball activity. This unknown person wasn’t at any previous weekly activity and it appears that no one knew this person. A few moments later, Elder Fauber was shot multiple times, and the shooter then fled the scene.

No one else was injured. Counseling has been provided to the two other missionaries and is being offered to anyone else at the scene.

The missionary was taken to UAB Hospital in Birmingham as soon as possible and underwent surgery for his wounds. Elder Fauber’s parents arrived the next afternoon. All prayers are welcome for Elder Fauber and his family.
