Local charity sponsors and administrators from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints helped unwrap these machines and then made the first purchases.
“We encourage people to “Light the world,” Elder Sikahema said.
The Giving Machines have raised almost $9 million for charities since they first opened in 2017. Elder Sikahema said that the giving spirit is at the very center of what it means to be a Christian.
Every single donation goes directly to a charity, with the Church covering all expenses. In 2020, the Giving Machines were unfortunately not open because of the pandemic across the world. However the year before, they raised almost $6.3 million for charity! Some of the things you can buy are Polio vaccines, Sheep, produce, medical supplies, school kits, chickens and a lot more!
“As a boy in Tonga, we ate chicken for Christmas. So I figured, someone could get three chickens — and it’s a good price, too,” Elder Vaiangina Sikahema said.
These charities across the world include CARE, Church World Service, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, UNICEF and WaterAid. There are also more than 40 local charity sponsors that are participating.
