The word Priesthood is a word with two meanings. The first meaning is that it is the power and authority of God. The Priesthood has always existed and it will always exist.

( Alma 13:7-8)

The second meaning of the word priesthood is the power of God given unto men to act in his name. Only men receive the priesthood and they usually receive part of it at the age of eleven. As they get older, they get more responsibilities with God’s power. The older they get, the more power and responsibility are given to them through the priesthood. The blessings of the priesthood are available to all that accept Christ’s gospel. Women has access to the priesthood but they are not given the ability to hold the priesthood.

There are two types of priesthood; the Melchizedek and Aaronic. This revelation was give to Joseph Smith in 1835. The Melchizedek Priesthood is called that way because Melchizedek was such a great high priest. Before his day it was called the Holy Priesthood. The second priesthood is called the Aaronic priesthood. It was given to Aaron and his seed. Christ holds all of the priesthood keys and he took away the power of it upon the earth when the great apostasy happened. Other religions may claim that they have the priesthood authority but they do not. The Prophet of Christ’s church, is the only person on earth authorized to hold and exercise all priesthood keys. Men given the priesthood has some of the keys but the Prophet has all of them.

The priesthood is used to bless the sacrament, give blessings, preform baptisms and so much more! It is truly God’s power given to men to do his work and to help and serve others. Priesthood power is real and it is important. If there was no Priesthood, no one on the earth would be able to act in God’s name. The priesthood is important because we are able to do many mighty works and miracles upon this earth through God’s power, give to us.
