Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation.

That inasmuch as any man drinketh wine or strong drink among you, behold it is not good, neither meet in the sight of your Father, only in assembling yourselves together to offer up your sacraments before him.

And, behold, this should be wine, yea, pure wine of the grape of the vine, of your own make.- D&C 89:4-6

On February 27, 1833, the prophet Joseph Smith received revelation about the word of wisdom. The Lord told him of substances that are bad and harmful to everyone’s bodies. In the word of wisdom he says what foods are good for us and how much we should probably eat of it each day. It also says that in the last days, evil men will do something to certain substances that can harm us. We can already see the effects of smoking and drinking strong drinks on people.

The lord revealed some things that are harmful like beer, coffee, tea and tobacco just to name a few. It is a sin to partake of these things. We may not know all of the reasons why but we do know it is for us to be protected and to be able to stay healthy. God promises health, knowledge, wisdom and protection to those who obey the Word of Wisdom. (Doctrine and Covenants 89:18–21).

It is also important that we are to avoid things that can be addictive. It does not matter if it is illegal or legal. The laws of man are not the laws of God. We need to live a higher law. God gave us the Word of Wisdom so that we can be healthy and so we do not loose our agency from becoming addicted to harmful substances.

When someone is addicted to something, they no longer have the ability to choose to partake of it. Satan doesn’t want anyone to be able to choose and he does this by luring us in and addicting us to certain things. This is why the Word of Wisdom is important. It will protect us and help us to keep our ability to choose.
