“All missionaries are safe,” Julia Fellows, North America Southeast Area Communication Director reported. “They were moved to higher ground ahead of the storm.”

All Missionaries serving in the areas battered by Hurricane Ida were lucky reported safe on Monday, Aug. 30. Local priesthood and Relief Societies are gathering early reports of the storm’s impact on members of the church and Church properties.

Damage reports for Church- and member-owned properties were happening on Aug. 30 in Ida-affected areas of Louisiana.

This Hurricane pounded the shore on Sunday, Aug. 29. This is one of the worst powerful storms to ever hit the United States. The Hurricane Ida knocked out power to all of New Orleans, blowing roofs off of many buildings and reversing the flow of the Mississippi River!

“Many, many people are going to be tested in ways that we can only imagine today,” the governor said.

The hurricane was blamed for currently one death after a person was found dead after a report of a fallen tree on top of home in a suburb of Baton Rouge. The power outage in New Orleans unfortunately increased the city’s vulnerability to flooding and because of that, left hundreds of thousands of people without air conditioning and refrigeration in increasing dangerous summer heat.

Ida is a Category 4 storm which hit on the same date Hurricane Katrina attacked Louisiana and Mississippi 16 years earlier. It apparently came ashore about 45 miles west of where Category 3 Katrina first struck.

Ida’s 150mph winds made it for the fifth strongest hurricane to ever hit the United States mainland! It dropped a few hours later to a Category 1 storm with maximum winds of 95 mph. It’s eye was about 45 miles northwest of New Orleans.

Officials have said because of the escalation from a couple of thunderstorms which led to a massive hurricane in just three days left no time to organize a mandatory evacuation of New Orleans’ 390,000 residents.
