Many locals in the Germany’s Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler started calling the missionaries and members “Engel unterwegs” (“angels on the go”)
Many members and missionaries from The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter-Day Saints, have spent more than 12,000 hours helping victims of the terrible floods in Europe. Many of these missionaries and members were wearing the yellow Helping Hands vests. Many Downpours led rivers to overflow. The floods became so strong that they swept vehicles away and killed more than 200 people in western Germany and Belgium.
After many weeks following these floods, volunteers headed into the communities in Belgium and Germany that have been impacted by the floods. They helped clear away deberes out of homes and businesses. Members of the church in Luxembourg have donated clothing to different local organizations that are helping the flood victims. Church members also donated food, pumps, (to pump out water) and support.
Elder Erich W. Kopischke, the first counselor in the Europe area, presidency and a General Authority Seventy said “As a Church, we’re deeply grateful to all who’ve sacrificed their time and resources to help those in need. Seeing our missionaries and members serving alongside with neighbours, friends, and with total strangers, fills our hearts with humility and joy.” Elder Erich and his wife, Sister Christiane Kopischke, also helped with the cleanup in a local Catholic kindergarten in Germany.
“There was a very positive, cheerful atmosphere, despite the very hard and exhausting labor and devastated surroundings. The helpers were not unhappy and didn’t complain about the circumstances but seemed to really enjoy what they are doing,” Sister Christiane Kopischke said.
