The humanitarian arm of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, through their charities has sent urgently needed supplies to help relieve the suffering of Afghan refugees that are arriving in Qatar.
The Charities have so far provided clothing, hygiene supplies, shoes and infant care items, as well many toys for the children. These people and families who had fled Kabul and the Taliban by the thousands are in desperate need of help. Many of these refugees arrived in Qatar with only the clothes they were wearing. It has been reported that many were in need of food and other supplies.
“We saved lives and bridged the gap for the first three days for thousands of Afghan refugees,” Jonathan Dawson said. “Without this, I shudder to think what might have happened. The donations from Latter-day Saint Charities were heaven sent.”
Hundreds upon thousands of Afghans have been trying to flee Afghanistan since the Taliban took over the country in early August. This is because President Biden has pulled almost all U.S forces out of Afghanistan, which resulted in utter chaos.
Fortunately, Members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and friends in the area were able to collect the much needed supplies from local stores, many of which offered discounts. The supplies collected were loaded into large passenger vans. Most of the volunteers worked day and night to distribute the much needed supplies to the arriving refugees.
“It is inspiring to witness Latter-day Saints and our friends reaching out to help immediately and tirelessly,” Elder Perkins, president of the church’s Middle East/Africa North Area mentioned. “The Church of Jesus Christ has a long history of aiding refugees, and this will continue to be a priority. Our concern is for all who suffer. We anticipate ongoing needs and are prepared to respond as appropriate.”
All known members of the Church who were deployed or working in Afghanistan are out of the country and accounted for.
