Part One Of Becoming Closer To God
It is extremely important to become closer to God. He wants you to be closer to him and you should desire the same. One of the reasons we are on this earth is to become closer to God. Why is it so important to become close to him? Well, good question! The reason that we must get closer to him is because he is the way to happiness! God is the way to live with our families forever! If we do not get closer to God, there is no way for us to receive happiness and to be with our families for all eternity. When we get closer to him, our lives will improve dramatically for the better.
“If there were no God there would be no redemption, no resurrection, no eternities to anticipate, and consequently no hope.” (Spencer W. Kimball, The Miracle of Forgiveness, Salt Lake City: Bookcraft, 1969, pp. 3–4.)
Now then, since we now know why we need to become closer to God, we need to find out how to become closer to him and more like him. There are many ways to draw closer to God.
“The very best way to know God is to become like Him.”—Elder C. Scott Grow, “And This Is Life Eternal” Created by Jenae Nelson.
How do we become like God? Christ is the perfect example of how to do that. If we act like Christ, do what he did and be a light in this dark world, we will be more closer and like God. There is a LOT of ways to become closer to him like praying, listing to church music, repenting and going to the temple just to name a few. Because there is a lot of ways to get closer to God, I am not going to list all of them. In this short series, I am just going to talk about the most important ways to get closer to him. Hopefully you will have a desire to draw closer to him while reading this series.
Part Two Of Becoming Closer To God
“It is mentally rigorous to strive to look unto Him in every thought. But, when we do, our doubts and fears flee.”—President Russell M. Nelson, “Drawing the Power of Jesus Christ into Our Lives”
God is our Father in heaven. He is our spiritual dad! And he wants us to be more like him because he wants us to be able to return to him. If we return to our Heavenly Father, we will receive eternal happiness.
“From the very beginning, we followed the light; we followed our Heavenly Father and His plan. Seeking the light is in our spiritual DNA.” (Elder Mark A. Bragg of the Seventy, Apr. 2017 general conference)
God sent you down into the earth for a reason. He did it so that he would be able to truly know if we love him and if you would choose him over the things of the world and over the devil. John 14:15 “If ye love me, keep my commandments.”
That’s right! If we love him we will keep his commandments and do what he says. If you desire to keep his commandments, he will prepare a way for you to keep his commandments. Now then, what are his commandments, how do we know the truth? The best way to know what his commandments are is through the scriptures. The scriptures hold the truth. The second way to know what Heavenly Father’s commandments are is by modern prophets and apostles. The reason this is second on the list is because unfortunately, prophets and apostles are human and they can make mistakes. They have made mistakes in the past. This is why when a person that is an apostle or a prophet says something that doesn’t seem right, you should ask God of what they are saying is true. We should always ask God if we need an answer. If we ask him for an answer, he will answer you.
Matthew 7:7-8
7 Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you:
8 For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.
Now just to recap on what we were saying at the beginning, the best ways to get closer to God is to keep his commandments and to act and do what Christ has done.
Part Three Of Becoming Closer To God
God is there and he wants you to progress and to learn as much as you can so that you can live with him again. As you may or may not know, the Prophet Joseph Smith was killed on June 27, 1844. In the last few months of his life, he gave two sermons: The King Fallett Discourse on April 7th, 1844 and The Sermon In The Grove on June 16th, 1844. In those two speeches, Prophet Joseph Smith articulates his Navoo doctrine that men have the ability to become Gods but, I am sure that the same applies for woman.
Think about it this way, if we become like God, don’t we technically become a god? Brigham Young later would label this idea “eternal progression,” which remains the way we mostly speak of it today.
Lorenzo Snow, “As man is, God once was, as God is, man may become.”
Now remember what I said in part two of this series, if this doesn’t seem right you should ask God.
Wow, this is a lot to take in! Husbands and wives have the ability to possibly become Gods and Goddesses. This obviously would mean that God has a wife. We have both a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother.
“We are part of a divine plan designed by Heavenly Parents who love us,” taught Elder M. Russell Ballard of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles.
Members of The Church Of Jesus Christ Of Latter Day Saints are taught to pray to Heavenly Father, but as President Gordon B. Hinckley said, “The fact that we do not pray to our Mother in Heaven in no way belittles or denigrates her.”
Christ only said to pray to God and no one or anything else. We find this instruction in Matthew 6:6, “But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father…” and in Matthew 6:9, “In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.”
All in all, we should become closer to God. I promise you if you desire to become more like Heavenly Father and you become closer to him, you have will experience more peace in your life, you will feel the spirit more often and that you may receive eternal happiness!
“And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures. the things concerning himself.”Luke24:7
