My wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil – Doctrine and Covenants 10:43 – Come, Follow Me Ponderize and Commentary
Doctrine and Covenants 10:43
43 I will not suffer that they shall destroy my work; yea, I will show unto them that my wisdom is greater than the cunning of the devil.
Dictionary.com defines cunning as: “skill employed in a shrewd or sly manner, as in deceiving; craftiness; guile.” Cunning men often pass as wise men, or at least attempt or desire too. Satan, desires and attempts to pass off as wise, but regardless how hard he attempts and desires to be wise, he is not. Dictionary.com defines wisdom as: “the quality or state of being wise; knowledge of what is true or right coupled with just judgment as to action; sagacity, discernment, or insight.” Satan will always follow after his own agenda or desires in a cunning way, and he will not conform to truth unless it conforms to his will. Those two cannot walk side by side each other, for they are polar opposites. The best he can do is to mingle in truth and scripture into his teachings, but rest assured they will always be bent and twisted to be in alignment with his teachings.
God is filled with wisdom for He is the embodiment of truth. We would be wise to learn to embody the will, mind, and voice of God. We do this through receiving and obeying personal revelation, which will never lead us astray.
Orson Hyde had this to say about personal revelation.
Jesus says, “Whosoever falleth upon this stone shall be broken.” Matt. 21:44 What stone does he refer to? The Lord says to his disciples, “Whom say ye that I am?” Peter answers—“Thou art the Christ, the Son of the living God.” Jesus indicated to Peter that he had spoken truly by saying unto him, “Blessed art thou, Simon Barjona: flesh and blood hath not revealed this unto thee, but my Father which is in heaven. And I say unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock will I build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.” Matt. 16:15-18 This stone or rock was the word of God revealed unto Peter. Present revelation from God, then, is the stone or rock which our Savior spoke of. Any church or any people built upon this foundation cannot be prevailed against by any power, for one obvious reason: whenever a people are built upon this foundation and they get into trouble and difficulty, they will ask the Lord to show them the way out; and being built upon present revelation and in communion with God, he will tell them what to do. His [p. 235b] wisdom is greater than the cunning of the Devil, D&C 10:43 and consequently the gates of hell cannot prevail against them. Any people built upon this foundation are hard to head, though their numbers may be small. The ancient church was never overcome until they lost this principle of present revelation. Then they were prevailed against and fell away, because they ceased to build upon this foundation—the stone or rock of present revelation. Solomon says—“Where no vision is, the people perish.” Prov. 29:18
Let us never be overcome as we learn to obtain the wisdom of God through personal revelation.
