3 Nephi 12: 19 And behold, I have given you the law and the commandments of my Father, that ye shall believe in me, and that ye shall repent of your sins, and come unto me with a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Behold, ye have the commandments before you, and the law is fulfilled.
Through Christ we are made new, “Old things are done away, and all things have become new.” (3Nephi 12:47) Thats right—everyday as we turn to Christ with full purpose we become a renewed person. “Come unto me with full purpose of heart, and I will receive you.” (3 Nephi 12:24) This is exactly what happened to the whole earth when he came, the old was done away and the new was brought to life. With the higher law came greater understanding and knowledge. This is the same in our lives right now—today! As we choose the higher law in our lives and strive to follow Christ in all things we will have greater understanding, knowledge, peace and joy! “Come unto me…keep my commandments…enter into the kingdom of heaven.” (3 Nephi 12:20)
My sister and her husband decided to make this a pattern to govern their marriage. When they come to a cross road of differing opinions, they choose the higher law. What a great way to live life! We can do this individually, when we come to crossroads in our daily walk with Christ, we will always be happiest if we choose the higher law. “Resist evil, but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also.” (3 Nephi 12:39) “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you and persecute you.” (3 Nephi 12:44) “Therefore, all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them.” (3 Nephi 14:12)
As we go through life seeking for the higher laws and striving to follow Christ in all things. “Ask, and it shall be given unto you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.” (3 Nepho 13:7) We can receive personal revelation and promptings to help us know the things that we are doing that we shouldn’t do and the things that we need to be doing that we aren’t doing. The Lord is anxiously waiting to guide us step by step. We just have to keep our focus on Him. “The light of the body is the eye.” (3 Nephi 13:22) “No man can serve two masters.” (3 Nephi 14:24) “Strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.” (3 Nephi 14:14) Christ is the highest law, and as we follow him we will become as perfect as possible for our mortal existence, “Be perfect even as I, or your Father who is in heaven is perfect.” (3 Nephi 12:48) This is where we should seek for approval and acceptance—in the Kingdom of heaven. “Seek ye first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all things shall be added unto you.”(3 Nephi 13:33) “Lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal. For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (3 Nephi 13:20-21)
We must do more than just hear the law we must bring action to the knowledge. “Whoso heareth these sayings of mine and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, who built his house upon a rock—And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not, for it was founded upon a rock.” (3 Nephi 14:23-24) “I am the law, and the light. Look unto me, and endure to the end, and ye shall live; for unto him that endureth to the end will I give eternal life.” (3 Nephi 15:9) “Ye have both heard my voice, and seen me; and ye are my sheep.” (3 Nephi 15:24) “There shall be one fold, and one shepherd.” (3 Nephi 15:21)
3 Nephi 16: 18 Thy watchmen shall lift up the voice; with the voice together shall they sing, for they shall see eye to eye when the Lord shall bring again Zion. 19 Break forth into joy, sing together, ye waste places of Jerusalem; for the Lord hath comforted his people, he hath redeemed Jerusalem. 20 The Lord hath made bare his holy arm in the eyes of all the nations; and all the ends of the earth shall see the salvation of God.
