Whosoever putteth his trust in Him – Mosiah 23:22 – Come, Follow Me Ponderize and Commentary

Nevertheless—whosoever putteth his trust in him the same shall be lifted up at the last day. Yea, and thus it was with this people.

If someone wants to be lifted up at the last day, or in other words, brought back into the presence of the Father, one must put his or her trust in God. This really got me thinking about the word trust. Merriam-Webster’s definition of “trust” is:
1a : assured [very confident] reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something
b : one in which confidence is placed
2a : dependence on something future or contingent : HOPE

This verse could be rewritten as follows : whosoever putteth his assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, and truth of God; possessing a perfect hope that God can and will save him, in His own way and timing, the same shall be lifted up at the last day. Yea, and thus it was with this people.

This is even more powerful knowing the bondage and hardships that the people of Alma had to endure. The previous verse states, “Nevertheless the Lord seeth fit to chasten his people; yea, he trieth their patience and their faith.” He truly chastened them and tried their patience and their faith. Imagine, for a few minutes, being in their shoes. How would your patience and faith be tried if you were brought into bondage, having heavy burdens placed on your backs, and all of this to the extent that “none could deliver them but the Lord their God?” As I ponder upon these things, my heart aches and tears come to my eyes. I tend to get impatient over the smallest most petty things, and I can only imagine, with great sorrow, what it would be like to be driven, beaten, and mocked as they were.

Although, we may all have different trials and challenges, one thing remains the same, God will try our patience and our faith. We must answer those trials with perfect trust in our Lord and our God, that we too can be lifted up at the last day.
