“All truth is independent in that sphere in which God has placed it, … as all intelligence also; otherwise there is no existence.” (D&C 93:30.) The Lord declares that herein lies “the agency of man” (see D&C 93:31), and with this agency comes the responsibility for self. With this agency we can rise to glory or fall to condemnation. May we individually and collectively be ever self-reliant. This is our heritage and our obligation. -Spencer W. Kimball “Becoming the Pure in Heart” 1978
As I read this I felt a surge of strength for who we truly are. We know we are divine daughters and sons of a loving, all-knowing, all everything Heavenly Father, but do we truly grasp what power this implies that lies in our potential? As heirs to our Heavenly Father, we have the power to love with the pure love of Christ, to forgive completely, to understand the mysteries of heaven…to name just a few.
Romans 8:15-17 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
I like that Spencer W. Kimball put our intelligence in the same understanding as truth, for we know that truth is truth and it stands independent of any force that tries to alter or diminish it. When the world or Satan changes truth, it is simply a temporal change, that is not accepted in heaven or in God’s arms here on earth. Truth stands, strong and firm, against all enemies or deceivers. We too know who we are—there is no lie or deception here on earth that can alter the fact that we are children of God. There is no choice that we make or rebellion that we engage in—that will alter who we are, we still stand independently and completely as children of God. We cannot at anytime, regardless of our mistakes or hardships step out of our divine identity.
2 Peter 1:4 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.
Unlike truth we stand as our own intelligence. Our identity will NEVER change, and Heavenly Father’s ultimate love for us will never diminish. However, through our own agency, we can choose to step outside of Christ’s light, and act in ways that are contrary to God’s laws. Laws that are in place to help guide us safely back home to dwell with our Heavenly parents. Without following these eternal laws, we become subject to Satan’s traps. Luckily Christ’s atoning sacrifice gave us the perfect antidote to Satan’s deceit, so that through repentance and change of heart, we can be realigned with God’s laws, which will direct us home.
“Oh, it is wonderful to know that our Heavenly Father loves us—even with all our flaws! His love is such that even should we give up on ourselves, He never will.
“We [might] see ourselves in terms of yesterday and today. Our Heavenly Father sees us in terms of forever. …
“The gospel of Jesus Christ is a gospel of transformation. It takes us as men and women of the earth and refines us into men and women for the eternities.” -Jospeh B. Wirthlin
