“They can tell the Spirit of the Lord from all other spirits will whisper peace and joy to their souls; it will take malice, hatred, strife and all evil from their hearts, and their whole desire will be to do good, bring forth
righteousness, and build up the kingdom of God.” (Marion G. Romney, Conference Report, April 1944, pp. 138-141; http://scriptures.byu.edu/gettalk.php?ID=122&era=yes)
This makes it so simple to understand when the Spirit of the Lord is speaking to us or whether it is another voice. Basically, it comes down to, by their fruits you shall know by what source it is coming from.
Matthew 7:15–16
15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep’s clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.
16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?
Just as it is with identifying a false prophet, it is the same for the spirits that speak to our minds. By their fruits or the outcome of what they prompt us to do, we can easily identify the source. If it brings us closer to Christ it is of the Lord.
