On Mother’s Day the speaker at church encouraged mothers to write a letter to all their children expressing their love and appreciation, then sharing their testimony. I loved the idea the second I heard it, because I knew that these letters come in handy at times in the kids lives when it is least expected. As for the man who gave the challenge, these types of letters are even more important because he lost his wife, leaving him with a daughter and two sons. His wife was an excellent letter writer; I know because she sent me many letters in an attempt to spread her love, even while she was too sick from cancer to make visits. I can only imagine the love she left her on earth for her kids, a priceless treasure.
“Each of us must come to our own personal testimony of the Lord Jesus Christ. We then share that testimony with our family and others. -Boyd K. Packer
As for myself I am not trying to knock these letters out in a day, I want them to be full of goodness and heartfelt love. I am also going to add my husband as well, and if I had grand kids I would add those too. I plan to make a copy and put it in my journal then give each child the original.
I became even more excited about this challenge when after the most wonderful Mother’s Day filled with massages, a nap, and movie with cuddles, my daughter gave me a letter. It was the best finale of an amazing day. I put it in my journal and have read it each day since. I hope that my letter will mean the same to my children, at least some day!
“Mend a quarrel. Seek out a forgotten friend. Dismiss suspicion and replace it with trust. Write a letter. Give a soft answer. Encourage youth. Manifest your loyalty in word and deed. Keep a promise. Forgo a grudge. Forgive an enemy. Apologize. Try to understand. Examine your demands on others. Think first of someone else. Be kind. Be gentle. Laugh a little more. Express your gratitude. Welcome a stranger. Gladden the heart of a child. Take pleasure in the beauty and wonder of the earth. Speak your love and then speak it again.” Howard W. Hunter
