On Sunday for Come, Follow Me with the family it was my turn with the big kids but we switched so that Kiera could give her lesson she gave in Relief Society to the bigger kids. I took the kids upstairs and started teaching about Jesus and Peter walking on water. I filled the bottom of our tub and I had each of the kids, starting from the youngest to the oldest, try and walk on water. I told them to focus really hard and try and walk on the water. After each child I increased my encouragement and pleading. Unfortunately, none of them could do it. We talked about the faith needed for Peter to walk on the water.
Matthew 14:26-31
26 And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear.
27 But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.
28 And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto thee on the water.
29 And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
30 But when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.
31 And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?
I have thought a lot about this throughout this week and my desire for increased faith has grown and grown. Some questions I asked myself are:
- Do I have the faith to get out of the boat?
- Do I have the faith to walk on water?
- Do I have the faith to trust in the Lord even during my greatest storm?
I believe that the first step is to believe that we have that faith and then let that belief work in us. We need to believe that we can personally and physically walk on water and have such faith. Belief and faith work together to create power in and through Jesus Christ.
I have begun to switch these questions into power statements and repeat them in my mind. They have given me great strength and already increased my faith. I have a long way to go, but this baby step has been amazing for me this week, try it out for yourselves.
- I have the faith to get out of the boat.
- I have the faith to walk on water.
- I have the faith to trust in the Lord even during my greatest storm.
