“The only thing worse then being blind is having sight but no vision.” -Helen Keller
Helen Keller is a great example of someone who didn’t let her blindness or loss hearing stop her from knowing who she is. We, too, must be able to see with eyes that have been blinded by the veil. We have been promised that
with the help of the Holy Ghost we can “see” who we were in our pre-mortal life, and what our purpose is here on earth. With His guidance we will be able to go through life with vision that surpasses that of our natural eyes. My daughter Annika, 11 years old, came to me the other day with this exact realization. “A camera can’t take in the beauty of the earth, only the eye.” Then she went further, “the eye can’t capture the beauty and magnitude of the eternities, only the heart.”
After that, we talked about how we all have blindness when it comes to understanding things beyond the veil and into eternity; however, we can learn to see spiritually through our efforts to learn that part of life through scripture sturdy, prayer and obedient listening the the Holy Ghost.
“Ask your Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, how He feels about you and your mission here on earth. If you ask with real intent, over time the Spirit will whisper the life-changing truth to you. Record those impressions and review them often, and follow through with exactness.
I promise you that when you begin to catch even a glimpse of how your Heavenly Father sees you and what He is counting on you to do for Him, your life will never be the same!” -Russell M. Nelson
Often, when I read the miracles in the bible where the Lord healed the blind, I feel that he is letting us know that he can heal our physical ailments, but even greater than that, through him we can SEE life through spiritual eyes that are blinded by the world. We just need the desire to see, and to have the faith that through our everyday efforts of spiritual wisdom and understanding we will gain a sight that is beyond that of our mortal eyes. Just like Helen Keller learned to see life here on earth with her heart, we, too, can have vision beyond what we know today.
“The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched. They must be felt with the heart. -Helen Keller
In this world, we all suffer from spiritual blindness and deafness. Often we believe we have everything under control. We just have to recognize what we can’t see and have the desire to behold it. It takes unbelievable humility to stay in a teachable mode throughout life. Henry B. Eyring says it perfectly, “(The) problem does not lie in what (we) think (we) see, it lies in what (we) cannot see.” We are like eternal teenagers to our Heavenly Father, always thinking we are right, and our way is just as good as His way. Many times it takes trials to bring us back to the reality that we need God in every aspect of our lives. Memory loss has been habitual through out history, as the scriptures tell us to remember all that the Lord has done. As we do, our lives will change, and our hearts will fill with an over abundance joy and a new capacity to enjoy all aspects of life, including the difficulties. Helen Keller’s journey to be able to “see” and enjoy the world, took years and years of frustrating work, resulting in a glorious life.
“Faith is strength by which a shattered world shall emerge into the light.” -Helen Keller
