Sunday was Regional Conference, were we honored to have several seventy and Elder Jeffrey R. Holland speak to us. I couldn’t write fast enough to gather all the magnificent information they were giving.
The main four pints were
1. The ministering program was designed to give more help not less to those we serve!
2. We were challenged to prepare one name for the temple by Christmas!
3. Keep the Sabbath Day more Holy! Teach our children about the significance of the sacrament!
4. Share the gospel and help in the gathering of Israel!
When I came home I asked my girls what they got out of the meeting! One of them said, “I had a hard time staying awake, because it was all the same stuff! Nothing new! I was hoping for something more.”
The first thing that popped into my mind was Alma 37:6 By small and simple things, great things are brought to pass.
There can be a yearning for something new that can creep into our hearts. I’ve had it too. The truth is, it’s just simple…yet we still struggle to do all that we’ve been asked to do. We can’t expect more when we don’t do or use what we have already been given! The “more” we seek, comes from the “same” that we have.
As we do what we have been council-ed to do we will find that we gain a clearer understanding and a stronger conviction We will become more and more converted to the Lord and our desire to obey with exactness will increase. This is the “more” that we seek. More of a relationship with our Savior, more peace, more love, more patience, more understanding, more humility, more faith….more, more more! All of these things are made possible by doing the “same” things!
It reminds me of sports …again…I know shocking. 🙂 I love yoga. The thing about yoga is the foundation is an ancient foundation, with poses that were developed 100’s of years ago. There have been some modern day adaptions that have been created as people have practiced and found different ways to do the same poses that work better for them. Also, with yoga, it’s about starting where you are at. Your not competing with your neighbor, you are working each pose to the point to where it best serves you and your goals. As you progress in yoga, the poses and routine doesn’t change, but the depth in which you are able to do the poses and routine changes. This is amazing because you can have level 1, level 2, and level 3 all doing the same workout and all benefiting equally. As you learn and practice yoga, you learn to engage all your muscles with each pose, and your workout actually increases the more you do. Even though your still doing the same poses and routine.
This is exactly how the gospel works. Yes, we are told each General Conference to pray, read scriptures daily, go to the temple, keep the sabbath day holy, love one another, forgive others, share the gospel, have hope, follow the commandments, trust the Lord, take the sacrament, repent, serve others, and many more. As we do these simple principles our ability to grow spiritually increases, we actually benefit more the more we do them, even though the principles are the same. They are the same principles that have always existed…and they will always exist! However, as we study, and obey, we are able to share ways that the principles fit our lives. Giving each other tips and advise on how to make these possible. For example, scripture study, can be done hundreds of different ways. Each person can find the way or ways that works best for them.
Most importantly, as we do these things the Holy Ghost will impress upon our hearts what we need to do more, or give us a deeper understanding. The Mysteries of heaven are opened by the small and simple things done…one day at a time…over a life time…and into the eternities.
“We need to be reminded that in total and over a significant period of time, seemingly small things bring to pass great things.” -Dallin H. Oaks
