A teacher ask her primary class, “How many of you would give $100 to the missionaries?” The whole class eagerly rose their hands. Then she ask, “How many of you would give $50 to the missionaries?” Again all the kids eagerly raised their hands. One more time she ask, “How about $1, who would give $1 to the missionaries?” This time all but one kid raised their hands. She kindly asked the child why he wouldn’t want to give away $1. The little boy slowly and hesitantly reached into his pocket. “You see,” he said, pulling out a single dollar bill. “I have a dollar and I don’t want to give it away”.

We are all like this at times. We look at the vast needs of the world and say, “Of course I would help the poor and needy” but when ask to increase our fast offerings for the needy in our wards, or to spend time calling a widow each week, we all of the sudden want to keep our dollar in our pockets.

What changed for the little boy?

His perspective.

When asked to do something out of reach he was more than willing. But when asked to give what he already had, his perspective changed and it became much harder.

My invitation to you all, and to myself, is to take the dollar out of our pocket and freely give it. For some that may be time, another a meal to someone in need, and again for another a friendly hug. No matter what our dollar is, no matter how small or grand, God needs us! He needs our efforts!!!
