I’ve always known that the Lord lightens our burdens…but sometimes it’s hard to really grasp it..then one day it clicked! You know me…I love to relate all spiritual principles to our everyday lives.
I was at the grocery store with my 4 little ones, trying to quickly get everything on my list. Rex kept complaining of a sore leg. I gave him some love and encouragement, and offered to carry him. He didn’t want to be carried, he just wanted to go home, and for his leg to not hurt anymore Nothing I said soothed him, within minutes his whining got louder and more intense…finally he sat down, and refused to walk anymore. His leg hurt too much to carry on. Our shopping came to a screeching halt. I got down on his level and asked him if I could please carry him. This time he agreed. I picked him up, and put him gently on my hip, so he could still be a part of the shopping experience without having to walk. By me carrying him, he was able to finish the shopping, even though his leg still hurt.
I will never forget his sweet gratitude, as he was so happy to have finished the grocery shopping in my arms. He was thankful that I LIGHTENED HIS BURDEN!!
I couldn’t help but smile, as I realized that this his exactly how the Savior lightens our burdens. He carries us! Sometimes we refuse his help. However, he never leaves our side, he is always there ready to lift us through our hardships, even if we wait to allow his help until we can’t go any further. He is always ready and willing to gently pick us up and help us carry on! We may still have to finish the trial, or endure to the end, but luckily we can do it in the arms of our Savior.
Alma teaches us this principle, when his people where in heavy bondage. They poured their hearts out to the Lord, pleading for him to help them be freed from bondage.
Mosiah 24:14-15 And I will also ease the burdens which are put upon your shoulders, that even you cannot feel them upon your backs, even while you are in bondage; and this will I do that ye may stand as witnesses for me hereafter, and that ye may know of a surety that I, the Lord God, do visit my people in their afflictions.
And now it came to pass that the burdens which were laid upon Alma and his brethren were made light; yea, the Lord did strengthen them that they could bear up their burdens with ease, and they did submit cheerfully and with patience to all the will of the Lord.
Could you feel the Lord picking them up and carrying them while they were still in bondage? They were still in bondage, but with the Lord’s added strength they were able to endure.
I have felt them so many times whether we were experiences financial challenges, illness with pregnancy, or grieving loved ones. I have felt an instant lift from my Heavenly Father as I look to him for strength.
The second part of this is recognizing the Lords hand, and thanking Him! This always helps minimize our problems as we don’t feel alone anymore.
Mosiah 24:21 Yea, and in the valley of Alma they poured out their thanks to God because he had been americium unto them, and eased their burdens, and had delivered them our of bondage; for they were in bondage and non could deliver them except it were the Lord their God.
Here is my favorite poem..it’s an all time classic!
