A little something I didn’t realize before, Joy to the World was actually written about the second coming of Christ, not His first coming.
Joy to the world! The Lord is come;
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make his blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing,
Joy to the earth! the Savior reigns;
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make his blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of his righteousness,
And wonders of his love
As a believer of Christ, I believe that He will come again to rule and reign on the Earth. I also believe that He is preparing the Earth for His return through the building up of His kingdom through the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
Now is the time for our hearts to “prepare him room”.
In the past I have wondered about having a King, it seemed to me that no one would want a dictator making all of the decisions for everyone.
The difference here is that this King makes all of His subjects Kings also. All who follow Him aren’t limited by this subjugation, but become unlimited in their potential to grow and become like Him. It’s hard to comprehend such a king because we have never had such a King. A King that was willing to die to liberate all of His people from the bonds of sin. A King whose love for each one of us defies description. Who does all in His power to bring us home.
The more I understand this love, the more I can’t help but try and share it with the world. It is the greatest thing. More valuable than anything. In the words of Parley P Pratt, it “quickens all the intellectual faculties, increases, enlarges, expands and purifies all the natural passions and affections; and adapts them, by the gift of wisdom, to their lawful use. It inspires, develops, cultivates and matures all the fine-toned sympathies, joys, tastes, kindred feelings and affections of our nature. It inspires virtue, kindness, goodness, tenderness, gentleness and charity. It develops beauty of person, form and features. It tends to health, vigor, animation and social feeling. It invigorates all the faculties of the physical and intellectual man. It strengthens, and gives tone to the nerves. In short, it is, as it were, marrow to the bone, joy to the heart, light to the eyes, music to the ears, and life to the whole being”
