God the Father – The Encyclopedia of Mormonism
“As the Prophet Joseph Smith said, “God himself was once as we are now, and is an exalted man, and sits enthroned in yonder heavens! That is the great secret” (TPJS, p. 345). Thus, the Father became the Father at some time before “the beginning” as humans know it, by experiencing a mortality similar to that experienced on earth.” http://eom.byu.edu/index.php/God_the_Father
If you think about it, as parents we get so much enjoyment and fulfillment out of watching our children grow and mature through all stages of life and then eventually they too become parents of their own as well. I could not even fathom all my kids growing up and never getting married or having kids.  What if all children everywhere had that same fate? Life would lose its magic. That is the beauty of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, it’s not about becoming some all powerful god, but rather becoming eternal parents just like our Heavenly Parents. That is the real meaning of God, “suffice it to say that of all the titles God has chosen for Himself, Father is the one He favors most.” Jeffrey R.
